Mercosur is a customs union and free trade area.
Uruguay has been a member of the Mercosur since its creation in the year 1991.
The Southern Common Market economic block became the world’s fifth-largest economy when recently Venezuela joined Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Guyana, Suriname and Uruguay to the group. The mentioned block encompasses 240 million people and has a combined GDP of nearly USD 3 trillion. Mercosur also counts Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru as associate members.
